Ask any parent out there, and they will likely tell you that there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for their child.
The moment we become a mother or father, our lives transform in ways that are hard to describe. We embrace the reality that we will dedicate the rest of our lives to caring for, cherishing, and worrying about the new life we have brought into the world.
Unfortunately, there are some things that no parent can shield their child from. Accidents and illnesses are as integral to human existence as joy and celebration, and every year, far too many children find themselves grappling with situations and health issues that are completely beyond their control.
Alina and Aaron Edwards’ lives were turned upside down the day they discovered that their nine-year-old daughter, Emma, had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Though they were understandably heartbroken, they held onto the hope that she could overcome cancer, only to receive the heartbreaking news from doctors a few months later that there was nothing more they could do to save Emma’s life.
In their despair, Emma’s parents resolved to do everything in their power to make their daughter’s wishes come true with the time they had left.
It goes without saying that most children in such situations might wish to meet a celebrity hero, perhaps visit Disneyland, or walk onto the field with their favorite athlete.
However, Emma’s wish was something entirely different. She wanted to marry her boyfriend, DJ, who was also just ten years old.
I have so much more to express and so many people to thank after Sunday, but at this moment, my mind is just not functioning and I…

Before long, Emma’s cause garnered significant attention within her local community. A group of volunteers and supporters took on the name “Emma’s Army” and set out to fulfill this little girl’s dreams before her time ran out.
Eventually, the Make-A-Wish Foundation intervened to assist Emma’s family in raising funds. Emma’s mother, Alina, shared: “Most kids dream of going to Disneyland, but Emma wished to get married, become a wife, and have three children.”
Indeed, reports indicate that the “wedding” was not the first occasion Emma and DJ attempted to tie the knot. The two children had previously tried to organize a wedding at school when they were just eight years old, even choosing their bridesmaids and groomsmen from their classmates. Unfortunately for Emma and DJ, their teacher did not allow the wedding, regardless of its unofficial nature.
However, their second wedding attempt received approval from their parents and the support of numerous kind-hearted individuals eager to ensure Emma could experience her special day.
“We put it all together in under two days, and everything was donated. It was incredibly special, and it all came together beautifully,” Alina disclosed.

When the big event came around, it was recorded on video, featuring interviews with some of the guests, including the groom, DJ.
“I thought she was the most beautiful person I ever saw. Ever since I loved her,” DJ shared.
Alina, on the other hand, was overflowing with admiration for her daughter’s sweet, young boyfriend. She posted an emotional message on Facebook that said:
“DJ has been Emma’s ‘Boo bear’ since 3rd grade, and let me tell you, watching these kids together will warm your heart. DJ looks out for her and supports her, making her heart soar. She loves him. And I know he loves her too! He has been by her side through all her ups and downs and kept her smiling the entire time. DJ will always be family.”]}

On June 29, Emma’s special day came to life as she arrived at the venue in a wheelchair, lovingly pushed by her parents. She wore a stunning purple dress for the event and radiated joy as her father walked her down the aisle.
During the ceremony, Emma and DJ exchanged rings and vows, culminating in a sweet kiss from DJ to his bride.
After the wedding, Emma returned to her bed to rest, but her joy from celebrating her special day was clear to everyone around her.
Tragically, a few weeks later, on July 11, 2023, little Emma passed away after her courageous fight.
Emma’s obituary stated: “Emma Brooks Edwards entered heaven and into the loving arms of her Great-grandma Frannie Annie on July 11, 2023, surrounded by those who loved her most. Emma was 10 years old and bravely battled ‘The imposter,’ Leukemia, for 16 months. Our little unicorn was born on April 22, 2013, to loving parents and three older siblings, completing the Edwards family. She had a passion for arts and crafts, enjoyed practical jokes, cherished her family and friends, loved Jesus, and adored her newlywed ‘husband,’ DJ. Emma was a beacon of light to all who knew her and an inspiration to everyone she met. She was truly the best daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, aunt, ‘wife,’ lol, and friend. Her legacy is one of strength, humor, and boundless love for all.”
Rest in peace, Emma. Such a beautiful young girl taken from us far too soon.
